Description

Really looking for critique on this character design please guys and gals!

World War Two super-heroine Gale, alter ego to Abigail Juliet Stephens. She is still something of a WiP and this is the first image of her.

She's not immune to cold at altitude so wears a standard issue RAF Sidcot suit and fleece lined flying boots.

Foreword - Corporal Abigail Stephens is an engine fitter-mechanic serving with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during WW2, she is an exceptionally proficient mechanic stemming somewhat from a love of motorcycles. She is a relatively quiet woman considering her tomboyish nature being thoughtful and methodical, enjoying solitary activities such as reading as well as socialising. Her current employ is dependent on the deployment of her superhuman alter-ego, Gale, when she is not needed Corporal Stephens fulfils her role of mechanic with great aplomb.

Gale is something of a wild card, though her abilities have seen her employed by the RAF on various missions from downing enemy night fighters to reconnaissance photography she has issues with authority and self-discipline. There is no doubt her superhuman strength and other abilities have given her a  rather head strong and at times even egotistical attitude though she us undoubtedly loyal and respectful to her comrades in the Air Force, if not her superiors.

Scientific study - Corporal Stephens and her superhuman alter-ego Gale have been the subject of scientific scrutiny for the past 2 years with researchers covering the disciplines of physics, biochemistry, biophysics and psychology. Unfortunately due to the exigencies of war initial observations have been the limit of research in many of these fields.

Despite this limitation the following synopses give a rationalisation of the findings and understanding of her condition to date, scientific speculation versus hypotheses and theories is clearly noted throughout the text.

Psychology - Perhaps the best understood aspect of Ms. Stephen’s condition is the psychological aspect, showing clear aspects of dissociation of personality and yet each persona shares at least some memories of the other. In terms of specific examples of this dissociation Ms. Stephens is a fully trained armourer in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and speaks fluent French, Gale can neither speak French or serve in the role of an armourer yet has combative skills alien to Ms. Stephens and yet both are aware of each other’s exploits whilst the other is not manifest. As is to be expected their personalities are quite disparate and the basics are listed in bullet points above, simply put Ms. Stephens is far quieter, more reasoned, logical and mature than Gale. She does sometimes have difficulties in dealing with her double life, particularly when Gale is behaving in a manner she disapproves of as there is little she can do to influence this.

Gale’s mental state, particularly given her abilities is of some considerable importance. It is clear she is somewhat emotional and impulsive with a recorded disdain for authority and head strong attitude. She has, on occasion used her abilities in a childish and petulant manner motivated by emotional responses which is of some concern but she is most definitely loyal to her nation, service and comrades. This all said in a peacetime scenario concerns have been raised over what can done to keep her occupied without an enemy to ‘throw’ her against and her possible behaviour if no fitting occupation could be found.

Flight - Gale’s ability to fly is a complete mystery with speculative explanations based around gravitational manipulation, beyond the realm of theoretical physics or electromagnetic manipulation, either of which would raise a further list of currently unanswerable questions were the demonstrated to be true.

In terms of physical observations of her abilities a top speed of 613mph has been recorded, she is also incredibly agile and can withstand higher g-forces than the most resilient human during aerial manoeuvre but as of yet the maximum g force she can withstand has not been ascertained, nor has a maximum altitude been established so far she has flown on operations up to around 36,000 feet though this requires an oxygen supply.

Gale also has the ability to hover effortlessly in place in the worst weather conditions, it is suggested that she possesses a similar mechanism to that of balance in humans though in this instance manipulating whatever force keeps her in the air and propels her through it. Though she must obviously also have conscious control over this force she cannot adequately describe how she controls it in a way that would give any insight into the mechanism at work.

Strength – Raw power is the corner stone of Gale’s effectiveness in her wartime role but due to the exigencies of war and the Air Force High Command keeping her busy over the skies of occupied Europe it is as of yet untested under scientific conditions, it is hoped that soon this will be rectified as it is hoped it is one attribute which may be more easily explained by current scientific understanding. That said there are physicists who believe her strength which is known to be exceptional may be facilitated in part by the force which allows her to fly. This remains to be seen. For the moment tentative evaluation reveals a grip which can easily leave finger holes in aircraft aluminium and through attrition rip apart a fuselage. She has been observed by bomber crews removing the canopies and associated framework of enemy aircraft in one motion.

Speed – Flight speed has already been covered but it is clear that Gale can achieve speeds on foot similar to Olympiad sprinters, a little shy of 30 mph but can maintain this speed for a longer period, typically covering a distance of a mile or so before anaerobic respiration is exhausted. At a running speed of around 20 miles per hour she can cover distances of up to 10 miles with little difficulty.

Agility – Gale’s agility goes hand in hand with her strength when employed in a combative role, it can be said that her reactions are better than those of the average human though this has yet to be quantified. Her physical strength allows her to jump, land and climb with ease. Despite this her balance and skill at climbing are not infallible though her resilience and strength and quick reflexes often allow her to negate any intrinsic clumsiness.

Physical Resilience - From a physical point of view Gale is immensely resilient; she is nearly invulnerable to small arms fire in so much as the slight wounds caused by typical rifle calibre cartridges heal in seconds. That said it is postulated that enough near-simultaneous hits from fairly heavy calibre cannon shells (20mm and above) could overwhelm her ability to heal and a direct hit from an artillery shell would prove fatal. Given her relative small size and extreme agility such a scenario is deemed highly unlikely. All this said the risk of shrapnel from heavy flak is still a very real one during high altitude missions and the risk of accurate anti-aircraft fire from light flak batteries is of constant concern to senior officers though Gale shrugs it off.

Her initial increased resilience to injury is not currently understood, an example would be a rifle round which on striking her skin is likely to leave a wound concurrent with slipping and gouging with a blunt instrument such as a screwdriver. The rapid healing is postulated to be a function of blood composition and metabolic rate though as of yet nothing conclusive has been shown. The rate of healing has been roughly logged; a wound caused by a strike from a rifle round will heal in a matter of 4 or 5 seconds leaving barely any scarring.

Gale’s resistance to cold and reduced atmospheric pressure are greater than those typically observed in humans as she can rapidly attain altitudes up to around 25,000 feet with no ill effects, beyond this she must use an artificial oxygen supply to prevent hypoxia.
